Challenge
A major utility company finds its data infrastructure aging badly and unable to scale to meet business demands. Constant security patching leads to costly downtime in the major switching farms and major operational expenses. IP network instability leads management to believe that the current network cannot meet government regulations, will lead to ever increasing maintenance costs and leave the company unable to extend its product offerings to customers.
Solution
TorreyPoint engineers collaborate with the utility to design a scalable, rational, next-generation architecture to support government regulations, multicast, video, security, QoS and management requirements across a regional IP/MPLS core. TorreyPoint engineers act as escalation engineering in vendor test scenarios and work to establish the right technical solution. As operational expenditure, performance and reliability are technical concerns; TorreyPoint deploys a service-provider architecture with a new primary router vendor as the next-generation model. TorreyPoint actively assists in the prototype build and deployment. We also create a NOC red book and help design a network management architecture to handle this multi-vendor network. TorreyPoint provides level 1 and level 2 troubleshooting and support for utility NOC staff post-deployment.

The prototype deployment allows extensive testing of the key network requirements and rollout is planned rationally. During vendor selection, prototype and deployment, TorreyPoint engineering both validates design and helps train operations staff. We also act as technical escalation to operations staff post deployment.

A purpose-built, highly reliable, multi-service data core is phased into deployment on time and on budget. Operational expenses associated with vendor security patching drop significantly. The business units now have a platform to deploy next-generation services to their customers.
